Microsoft has added a framework to it’s latest version of the Windows operating system ‘Windows 7′ to deal with common biometric requirements. Microsoft’s website says;

Biometrics is an increasingly popular technology that provides convenient access to systems, services, and resources. Biometrics relies on measuring an unchanging physical characteristic of a person to uniquely identify that person. Fingerprints are one of the most frequently used biometric characteristics, with millions of fingerprint biometric devices that are embedded in personal computers and peripherals.

In Windows® 7, the Windows Biometric Framework (WBF) provides support for fingerprint biometric devices through a new set of components. These components improve the quality, reliability, and consistency of the user experience for customers who have fingerprint biometric devices.

The Windows Biometric Framework supports the Secugen Hamster Plus scanner! Which means our best value USB scanner can be purchased to use on Windows 7 systems without the need for additional software.

The Secugen Hamster plus can be purchased online from our website here.

With biometric solutions for attendance making their way into schools, many parents are beginning to express concerns about information which is kept on record about their children. However contrary to common belief, these systems do not actually store any biometric information– not even a fingerprint image! And cannot be used externally to identify individuals, as this article explains…

How Eyenetwatch fingerprint systems work:

When your fingerprint is first scanned, the image itself is actually never actually saved or recorded – Instead, the image is analysed for unique and distinctive points across the fingerprint which then creates a string of computer information.

This information is then passed through an encryption algorithm. This means that it undergoes a complex process, which cannot be reverse engineered to re-create an image or any other data which would identify an individual. The encrypted data is equivalent to a 60 digit password and is completely useless and indecipherable by itself. This is the information that is then stored.

As this process is one way only, the only way in which a user can be identified is to re-create the process and compare the new result with the one previously achieved. If the results are deemed to be similar, then the user can be identified.

This means that the encrypted information by itself is both meaningless and useless in any other system, and can only be used where it is directly compared to a new result which is run through the same encryption process.

The result is a system which can accurately ensure that your child is attending school appropriately, without directly storing any biometric personal information or infringing any personal rights.

Novell’s NMAS (Novell Modular Authentication Service) is a component of eDirectory which provides advanced options regarding login methods and user rights to protect your networks most valuable information.

The Secugen Enterprise NMAS method is a software package which adds fingerprint security to your eDirectory service via NMAS. You can replace a login password with a fingerprint – thus requiring users to prove their identity rather than their knowledge of a password which could have been lost, stolen, forgotten or shared.

Administration of all fingerprint profiles are managed through the existing ConsoleOne utility that manages all network resources – so no new training is required. The login process takes place in Secugens highly intuitive and easy-to-use UI.

Adding this functionality to your network will save administration costs as passwords will no longer need to be reset. This solution integrates seamlessly and requires no coding what-so-ever. Administrators can choose to do monitored enrolment or provide an automated service to users, and up-to 10 fingerprints per person can be added to prevent any problems caused by finger or hand injury.

The Secugen NMAS login method starter pack comes in at only £169.99 (excl. VAT & delivery) and is compatible with all Secugen hardware. You can either add a USB fingerprint scanner like the Secugen Hamster Plus to each terminal, or why not consider replacing the keyboard or mouse with a built-in fingerprint version? EG/ The Secugen Optimouse Plus or the Secugen Keyboard Plus.

For more information about the Secugen NMAS login method and to buy, visit the product page here.

The Starter pack comes with 10 user licenses, additional licenses can also be purchased here.

If you have any experience with programming or application development, then developing your own biometric solutions might be easier than you think.

This article will focus on the FREE software development kits available through Eyenetwatch for use with Secugen hardware – Although please be aware Sagem and other brands also offer high quality SDKs and integration packages.

Secugen’s Software Development Kit (SDK) makes it easy to make your own applications. The FDx and SDK pro series offers low-level APIs and a small / simple library making it easy to create applications compatible with your UI.
On the more advanced end the SecuBSP comes with optimized enrolment and verification wizards, and extensive device functions.

Platforms supported include Windows, CE.NET, Java, Linux, X86 and SPARC Solaris 10

Information security is paramount for any business, especially those which typically handle sensitive or personal information. Our customers often represent schools, colleges, NHS trusts, healthcare institutions or surgeries – Looking for a way to secure this information as it is used and transferred by staff.

One of the best practises for eliminating the possibility of data loss or theft is issuing staff each with a secure USB memory stick.
